A UN‑Artworks Community Engagement Series

Beyond the Page: Creative Voices in the Community

The featured artist opens a door, but the community helps determine what happens in the room.

Beyond the Page is a community engagement series that brings artists, writers, storytellers, makers, filmmakers, musicians, and other creative voices into meaningful conversation with the communities around them.

Every gathering begins with a featured creative guest, but the experience is shaped through dialogue, participation, curiosity, and shared discovery. Rather than presenting creativity as something performed for an audience, Beyond the Page invites everyone to become part of the conversation.

What is Beyond the Page?

More than an artist talk. More than a workshop.

Each experience is designed to create genuine opportunities for people to connect—with artists, with one another, and with the stories, ideas, and questions that shape their communities.

Every gathering is intentionally different because every community is different. Programs are developed around local interests, partnerships, audiences, and opportunities, creating experiences that feel authentic to the people and place where they occur.

Why it matters

Communities already possess what they need.

Communities already possess creativity, wisdom, stories, traditions, and lived experience. Sometimes what is missing is not creativity itself, but opportunities to gather, listen, share, and imagine together.

Beyond the Page creates welcoming spaces where people encounter one another beyond familiar roles and assumptions, strengthening relationships while celebrating the creative knowledge that already exists within every community.

The goal is not simply to learn about an artist. The goal is to discover what becomes possible when artists and communities create meaning together.

What participants can expect

Every gathering is unique. Every gathering is welcoming.

Every Beyond the Page experience is shaped by the community it serves, but gatherings may include:

01

Conversations with Featured Artists

In-depth dialogue with creative guests who share their process, influences, and the questions that drive their work.

02

Guided Discussions

Facilitated conversation that invites participants to explore ideas, share perspectives, and connect across differences.

03

Story Sharing

Structured opportunities for community members to share their own stories, memories, and creative experiences.

04

Creative Reflection

Moments of individual and collective reflection that help participants connect the artist's work to their own lives and communities.

05

Hands-On Creative Experiences

Interactive activities that invite participants to make, write, respond, or create alongside the featured guest.

06

Community Dialogue

Open conversation that moves beyond the featured artist to explore the ideas, stories, and possibilities the work opens up.

No artistic experience is required. Curiosity is enough.

Creative voices we invite

Artists selected for generosity as much as craft.

Beyond the Page welcomes artists whose work sparks curiosity, conversation, and connection. Featured guests are selected not only for the quality of their creative work, but also for their generosity, openness, and willingness to engage meaningfully with the communities they visit.
